Overview

Melanie, also known as 花木蘭 (Hua Mulán), is a female warrior based on the legendary folk heroine of the same name, known from the text "Ballad of Mulan".

She is a character defined by her neutral and mix-up game, being capable of keeping opponents away with consistency and use her safer tools to keep the enemy where she wants.


Strengths Weaknesses
  • Mix-Ups: As stated, she can keep their opponents locked down thanks to the large range on her sweep (crHK), and her multiple overhead hitting special moves, making her have some of the best high/low mix-ups in the game.
  • Great screen controll: Moves like her projectile (236P), DP (214P) and sweep (crHK) cover some great angles where the opponent wants to be.
  • Bad wake up game: Her safest option when knocked down is DP, but the fact it doesn't knock down means that on grounded hits it will leave you with little space to get your neutral back.
  • Poor air options: While her anti-air game is better than average, her air to air and jump-ins are not great since her normals have little priority and don't hit below her, you're probably not jumping a lot with her.

This matchup is mostly a game of who can get the lead first and who can keep it better.

Melanie is who has to lift the heavier weight in this matchup, Claus is a character defined by his extremely versatile toolkit, making it very difficult to get the lead, however, once you get that lead it is a bit tricky to defend from Claus.

To fight him it is best to try and cover spaces where Claus wants to be while being careful of being too predictable and getting punished, use quick buttons that could hit Claus out of 214LP spam and consider using your own DP sparingly to stop certain approaches.
