Bloody Roar Extreme/Gado the Lion

Introduction

Gado is a heavy-hitting power character with lots of Guard Breaks, who is able to deal massive damage even with simple combos. While his attacks are sluggish, his mobility is surprisingly good, making him excel at counter-poking and whiff punishing. When on the offense, Gado is able to apply pressure with his many Guard Breaks, forcing the opponent to resort to Evade; this opens up his strong tick throw game, having a powerful Command Throw that deals big damage. Despite his more defensive playstyle, Gado's Guard Attack is one of the worst in the game due to having very little Guard frames. This means that, while he is able to control the midscreen very well thanks to his good normals and mobility, his options become limited if he is backed into the corner.

Playstyle

Pros Cons
  • Strong Footsies: A large part of Gado's kit focuses on attacks whose potency truly comes to the fore when used for counter-poking and whiff punishing. Combined with his strong movement, Gado is able to play a patient footsies-focused game in neutral that can condition opponents into sitting still.
  • Terrifying Mixups: With a large selection of Guard Breaks to his disposal, Gado can keep opponents locked down for long periods of time, setting up highly rewarding mid/low mixups and even strong throws should his opponent try to Evade.
  • Can Take A Hit: Gado has a naturally high defense rating, meaning he can afford to take more risks in neutral and on offense compared to most other characters.
  • Poor Defensive Tools: On top of a Guard Attack with very little in the way of Guard frames, Gado's kit generally sacrifices speed for power, making his ability to directly challenge offense limited — especially if his back is to the wall.
  • Must Get In The Opponent's Head: While Gado's mixup options are quite powerful, the slow speed of most of his kit means that much of it is liable to be interrupted before it can get going. As such, Gado relies on conditioning much more than most other characters.
  • Unreliable Beast Drives: Gado's Beast Drives have much more niche applications than most other characters: G-Bomber is a command grab, which limits its combo ability to only grounded confirms, while G-Cannon has a small chance to cause damage to himself. This means Gado must be very judicious with his Beast Drive usage.
