Gundam: Battle Assault 2/FAQ
How is GBA2 different from other games in the series?
Each game in the Battle Assault series is wildly different from the others. Even compared to GBA1, GBA2 is unique and has it's own rhythm and mechanics. It's very well possible you'll prefer another game in the series to this one.
Where can I play the game?
While you can play it on PSX of course, most players nowadays use emulators. The recommended ones are Duckstation (for local and online play), Bizhawk (for Lua support), and Mednafen (on netplay, usually through NullDC BEAR).
Duckstation is the preferred method for local and online play due to the emulator's overclocking options. Setting the overclock speed to 180% combined with the 60 FPS Gameshark code leads to lagless 60 FPS gameplay on all stages with (so far) no known negative side effects, and the online play uses rollback netcode with GGPO, letting you set your own delay (it can be 0) for a better experience and spectator mode.
What are the tiers?
While there's no fully agreed upon tier list at the moment, this is an aggregated tier list of the current opinions of top players. The top tiers and low tiers are generally agreed upon but the mid tiers are harder to get a solid read on.
Note: This list was last compiled on July 30th, 2022, and since then there have been many significant changes in the meta, meaning this list is subject to change very soon.
What characters should I start with?
It's fine to start with just about anyone in GBA2, as the large majority of characters are fairly simple and easy to pickup. However, if you really want a beginner friendly character, some good picks are RX-78, Wing, Burning, and Nu.
How do I netplay?
The game is generally played online through Duckstation, which uses rollback netcode with GGPO and performance enhancements, such as 60fps unlock. For finding games, it is recommended you join the community Discord.
Hidden characters and 60 FPS mod?
There isn't a mod to put the game into 60 FPS, but there are ways to edit the ram in Bizhawk and save states you can load for netplay to put it into 60 FPS and make the hidden characters available. You can find the downloads to these in the discord (will put a download here if there is enough demand).
To enable 60 FPS mode, use any one of these methods:
- Join the Discord and download the cheat files or savestate for Duckstation.
- Using a Gameshark or an emulator with cheat code support for Gameshark codes, add this code: 800A60F8 0001
- In Bizhawk, open Hex Editor and (in PSX MainRAM) go to 0x0A60F8, right click the value, freeze it, then poke it. Set it to 01.
