Kaneko's design document for Fists of Fire's control scheme

The default control layout in Fists of Fire is:

7 8 9

4 (5) 6 LP HP
                   LK HK
1 2 3

Additionally, ensure that a button is set to P1 Coin and P1 Start (usually Select and Start, respectively). You must "insert" a coin and hit Start to begin playing.
The emulator in Fightcade2 allows each button to be freely remapped, but does not support macros for any button combination.

Movement

Walking: Hold forward to walk forward, hold back to walk back. Holding back will guard against an opponent's mid, high, or overhead attacks (but not lows).

Dashing: Tap forward or back twice to dash in that direction.

  • There is also an advanced technique known as "wavedashing" where tapping forward, forward, back, forward (6646) in rapid succession results in two quick dashes.

Crouching: Holding down makes a character crouch. Holding down + back will make an opponent's high attacks whiff, while guarding against low and mid attacks (but not overheads). Holding down + forward is useful for some characters hitconfirms, as it prevents an accidental overlapping 236 input (i.e. Drunk Jackie's 2LK > 6HK).

Jumping: Tap up to jump straight up, or hold up + left or up + right to jump diagonally.

Wakeup Roll: When recovering from a knockdown, holding forward or back will cause the character to roll in that direction. Holding straight up, down, or neutral will cause the character to rise in place.

Attacking

Normals: LP/HP/LK/HK while standing, crouching, or jumping. Most standing HP, LK, and HK attacks are proximity-based, meaning they will change depending on distance from the opponent.

Command Normals: Normals that require holding forward or back while pressing a button. One character, Yeung, also has a jumping command normal (2HK in the air).

Specials: Attacks performed after performing a special input. Fists of Fire uses the following inputs for various special moves (denoted in Numpad notation): 236, 41236, 214, 63214, 623, 46, 16, 646, 28. Notably, there is no reverse DP motion (421), no 360 degree/SPD motion, and no double input like 236 x2.

Throws: When close to the opponent, input with 6HP/4HP or 6HK/4HK, depending on the character. Two characters also have crouching throws (input with 3HP/1HP) and one character has an air throw (6HK/4HK while in the air).

Autocombos: Repeatedly press 5LP to input a Normal Autocombo; refer to character page for Special Autocombo inputs

Getup Attack: LK or HK while rising from a knockdown.

Pursuit Attack: Up + LP or HP after knocking the opponent down. The character will jump onto the downed enemy and begin pummeling them, and will continue doing so as long as you mash the buttons.

Pursuit Counter: Any two buttons while knocked down, right as the opponent's pursuit attack hits. Used to defend against pursuit attacks and knock the opponent down.

Miscellaneous

Meter Charge: Hold HP or HK to start charging meter.

Taunt: Hit HP+HK simultaneously to drain some of the opponent's meter.

Mashing: Quickly mashing buttons and directional inputs will have an effect in certain circumstances:

  • On knockdowns, it will cause the character to wake up more quickly. This can mitigate damage from OTG attacks. The effects of mashing do not start until your character hits the ground, so you can prevent some hand strain by not mashing throughout the entire move's animation.
  • After pursuit attacks and certain throws, a mash indicator will appear for both characters. Mashing will cause these attacks to do more or less hits/damage, depending on who mashes faster.
  • Some special moves have additional hits that will come out if the attack button is mashed. This property is listed under Attributes section of the frame data as "Mashable".

Attack buttons have a greater impact on mash speed than directional inputs, but they should both be used in order to mash optimally.
