Kinnikuman Muscle Grand Prix 2/Atlantis

Atlantis

Story

Atlantis is the archerfish-themed Devil Choujin. He specializes in fighting near or in the water, which coincidentally happens to be where all his on-screen matches have taken place. Besides the expected aquatic prowess and ability to control water, Atlantis is also able to invoke the spirits of his deceased Devil Choujin allies to attack and restrain his opponent, provided that their blood is on his opponent's body. Kinnikuman's friends had to use a magic mirror to enter the spirit world in order to exorcise these evil ghosts.

Atlantis's main claim to fame was that one time he killed Robin Mask, in a now iconic scene where he triumphantly holds Robin Mask's helmet aloft.

Gameplay

Atlantis is one of a very small subset of characters in the entire game to have a projectile, but what sets him apart from the rest is that he is the only one to have a meterless fireball. This gives him an extremely unique neutral tool within the context of MGP2, one that is often compared to be more akin to a 2D fighter. However, the ability to sidestep and parry makes a fireball much worse than it might sound at first, and Atlantis's fireball can leave a lot to be desired (more details on that in the section on it below). Regardless, it is a core tool in his neutral gameplan and something that no other character really does.

Strengths Weaknesses
  • Has the only meterless fireball in the game in 44A.
  • Multiple forward-moving attacks.
  • Easy and consistent red KKD combo.
  • 44A is very low damage and have extremely poor meter economy.
  • Limited specials.
  • Mediocre damage.

  • Despite the 9f startup, the move rarely actually hits on frame 9, as the hitbox seems to start from the side. For reference, this jab hits Budo standing still on frame 10, but it hits Budo walking forwards on frame 9.

Atlantis's meterless projectile, heavy-stunning on hit and allowing for follow-ups if Atlantis is close enough to the opponent.

  • However, being a fireball, it is very easy to sidestep or parry. That said, in spacings where Atlantis cannot get anything off of it (e.g. from full screen) the opponent might opt to just get hit by the move, since it does very little damage, with dismal meter gain; hitting with Water Ball gives Atlantis no meter, while building almost a full bar of meter for the opponent. Because of this, Atlantis cannot really use 44A as a bullying/zoning tool as one might in a 2D fighter; hitting the opponent multiple times with this move without following up is functionally equivalent to giving the opponent free meter. It still has some notable uses, such as a whiff-punish, midrange neutral option or to stuff approaches, but in general it is a move that needs to be used more sparingly than it might initially appear.
  • Because the projectile hitbox starts behind Atlantis, the move's on-paper 13f startup is somewhat misleading, and rarely applicable on a standing opponent; this move hits Budo walking in front of Atlantis on frame 29.

Forward-moving special launcher. Unusually for a special, this move is cancellable, and its cancel window is before it becomes active. This enables kara throws (albeit a very slow one) and gimmicky "fake-out" mixups.
