Kim Sue-Il

Introduction

...MOVE, SCUM!

Kim Sue-Il is the presumed descendant of one Kim Kaphwan, being a police detective by trade. He won't be doing much detective work, considering he's much more apt at rushing people down, mixing them up, and comboing them into next year. Not that he has a projectile or anything -- he doesn't even throw his staff at you -- but he doesn't need one. He's really that simple.

Note: Kim's special move names are taken from Japanese sources as opposed to localized names because of their striking similarity to Kim Kaphwan. The English versions from the Arcade panel are annotated.

Strengths Weaknesses
  • The longest reaching normals in the game
  • Probably the best overhead, too
  • This man’s combos are actually stupid
  • It bears repeating that his combos are seriously stupid
  • Upper body invincible rekka that deletes fireballs
  • Only one minuscule weapon drop window in [2]8C
  • Cool sunglasses
  • Lacks a projectile
  • Several multi-hit normals makes him slightly more susceptible to guard cancels
  • None of his special moves are truly safe.
  • If you somehow managed to be disarmed you will lose throw and 3A.
  • If you play him people will probably hate you

You know Hangetsuzan? That move Kim does in KOF and Fatal Fury? Yeah it’s that. Here it serves as a ranged combo ender, OTG option and a very good guard cancel. Its decent speed and range also make it useful as an occasional poke, too.

Both hits must connect for a Pursuit OK KD otherwise it's a standard knockdown.

Officially translated as Crescent Moon Slash. Yes that is the same name as Kim Kaphwan's move.

Ah yes, the esteemed Kim Family Divekick. As with other dive moves, Hishuu Kyaku is useful for occasional punish and mobility. Has a follow-up in j.2B which knocks down, allowing for an OTG.

Officially translated as Swoop Kick.

Sue-Il’s take on the traditional Kim family flash kick. It has very little invincibility, so it’s not a reliable defensive tool, but its fairly generous horizontal range along with its damage makes it your go-to combo ender in most instances. It has a built-in follow up in 2C, which will net you an OTG when it connects.

Officially translated as Dazzling Flight Slice.

The start of Kim’s rekka series. The move can be followed up twice by inputting 236C as long as you have your weapon. This is a strange rekka, hitting way more times than three-stage rekkas usually do, and not being used for combos at all. The startup is quite long, but that’s because it is invulnerable on his upper body and every individual strike deletes opposing fireballs. Yeah.

Canceling into the follow-ups requires your weapon but can be done on hit, block or whiff.

Officially translated as 3 Rage Rammer. That name is awful.

  • 214B OTGs on everyone except Rosa, Kim, Mezu and King Lion/Leo.

Kim starts with a long range sweeping kick (that doesn’t hit low) before following up with a series of blows into a skyward kick, complete with fiery phoenix motif and everything. Good damage, easy to work into your standard combos, nets you an OTG, and even combos into itself on Gordon, because Kim really doesn’t like that guy.

Officially translated as Phoenix Kick. I just want to know who did this.
