Overview

Rei Ayanami (綾波 レイ, Ayanami Rei) is a key character in the anime Neon Genesis: Evangelion, appearing alongside Asuka, and Kaworu in Moon Lights 2 as Gainax guest characters.

Rei is the "First Child", and the pilot of Evangelion Unit-00. She has a withdrawn personality, but is shown to be completely, silently devoted to her duty as an EVA Pilot, receiving orders from NERV and carrying them out to her utmost capability.

Playstyle
Rei is a rush-down character, able to see high damage conversions off of stagger pressure and setplay in the corner, who uses high mobility and powerful buttons to force the opponent into a guessing game, where guessing wrong will lead to either a combo that resets into the setplay, or an infinite that seals the round early. What's the most you ever lost on a coin flip?
Pros Cons
  • Damage: Rei sports high damage conversions from stray hits, and can quickly hitconfirm into an infinite in the corner from any move.
  • Pressure: Rei has a dangerous corner high/low with 236A, a plus on block overhead that leads into an infinite on hit. On top of this, she has good stagger pressure with B normals that can link into themselves, a 2A that knocks down, and a TK kunai projectile that combos into her infinite that can discourage pressing out of her advantage.
  • Rush-Down: With impressive speed, a dash step, and a huge burst range with 236A, Rei has no trouble closing distance, and combined with a suffocating vortex and large hitboxes on multiple buttons, attempting to prevent Rei from getting in can prove to be a Sisyphean task at times.
  • Rekka Character: Rei sports two rekka attacks, her 214A series, and her 214B series, with 214A having half-screen hitboxes, with the first hitbox being able to combo into a knockdown that Rei can then capitalise off of, and her 214B series having an overhead finisher that also knocks down. She is actionable out of each hit of these rekkas relatively quickly, and can implement them as part of her stagger pressure.
  • Strong Pokes: With f.6A and 214A, Rei has some solid poking attacks to use which are safe and confirm well. However, other more specialized characters have better pokes.
  • Cool Move Names: The strongest trait a character can hope to have.
  • Weak Fullscreen Neutral: Rei lacks options to contest or fight outside out of the mid-range. Her only meterless projectile, j.214X, is fairly weak, especially compared to other characters with projectiles and anti-projectile tools, and she has to fight to quickly close the distance. Even her farthest moving option, 236X, can be a risky gamble, and low reward if it doesn't confirm well, and leaves her susceptible to counterattacks while airborne.
  • Made by the Blood, Undone by the Blood: In the same vein that Rei can quickly trap other characters into dying to an infinite, other characters are able to do the same to her. Characters such as Ryouko, who has an infinite from her divekick, that consists entirely of continuing to divekick, make Rei have to play carefully, and assess the risk/reward of her options, where both the risk and the reward can spell guaranteed death.
