What is Red Earth?

Red Earth is a hybrid of an RPG and a Fighting Game. Characters are leveled up during the single player mode and can be used to fight other players’ characters. The gameplay of Red Earth consists of the typical capcom fighter formula with an emphasis on space control. Each character has their specific range they excel in and have ways of either keeping opponents in that range or getting there themselves.
Characters have a lot of mobility, both on the ground and in the air, and each character has specific movement tools unique to them. The characters offer a lot of depth for how few of them there are, so there is just about any playstyle you could want. Because each character offers so much, two players of the same character can play very differently.

Are the bosses playable?

No, the bosses are not playable. Even if they were made playable, their movesets would be too sparse to offer any sort of depth.

How do character levels work?

When playing through the singleplayer story mode, your character will earn experience for various things, such as defeating bosses, collecting gems off the ground, etc. Your character will also receive "VS Points" for defeating other players. After collecting enough experience, your character will level up, giving them a variety of benefits with the main benefit being the unlocking of new special moves. VS Points are required for unlocking certain special moves or special move upgrades, and even some weapons. After a run is completed or your character is defeated, the game will provide you a password that keeps your character’s progress.

What is this password system?

Capcom implemented a password system for Red Earth in order to save your character’s level and stats. Simply enter the password for your character, and all of their stat increases and unlocks will be applied. Note that the passwords do NOT save your character’s current experience level or where you are in the story, however they do save the amount of VS Points you have. For more information, check here.

This site here lists all of the endings and how to get them.

What do the orbs do?

The orbs that you pick up off the ground are Red Earth’s version of "super meter". You can spend them to perform supers for your character. There are also universal elemental supers based on the specific element of the orb. Different characters have different elemental weaknesses, so specific supers will deal more damage to specific characters. A more detailed description of orbs as well as an explanation of each element’s super can be found here.

How do combos work in this game?

Red Earth is not a very combo oriented game, so combos are usually quite short and damaging. There are both "link" combos as well as "chain" combos. The best combos in the game are usually ones that deal a high amount of stun. Something to note is that there is no combo counter in Red Earth, so if you’re testing a combo in training mode make sure that the dummy is set to holding a blocking direction in order to be sure that it’s a true combo.

What is the combo notation for Red Earth?

Red Earth uses a unique notation for moves and combos based on the password screen:

How balanced is the game?

Red Earth is very balanced. Every character is viable and has won at least one tournament before. The top 3 characters are all very strong and have nearly even matchups with each other. The one outlier is Kenji, who sits below the rest of the cast. That said, he still has many good qualities that can make him a force to be reckoned with.
