Story

Ranno was known as a feared martial artist who trained under wise monks. But now he prefers to peacefully protect his swampy homeland. When he has no other option, you can see glimpses of his rapid and deliberate strikes. Combine his training with his poisonous nature and you have a real threat on your hands.

Gameplay

Overview Ranno is a versatile character who can switch between offensive and defensive heavy playstyles depending on his pilot; using his needles, ground movement, and combo strings to drive a wedge into the tiniest gap.

Strengths Weaknesses
  • Easy to learn: Ranno has a lot of easy and simple tools that don't take long to get a grasp of while also being very effective at what he does.
  • Great projectile; Ranno's needles can quite literally do it all. From locking down neutral, to confirming edgeguards, to extending combos they are one of the scariest projectiles in the game.
  • Great ground speed; With low ground friction and an above average dash speed, Ranno has no problem going for whiff punishes in neutral or dancing around his opponent.
  • Great edgeguarding; Ranno has some of the most potent edgeguards in the game with to needles comboing into fair's spike hitbox, as well as several "rinse-repeatable" moves to drain the opponent's resources.
  • Consistent Combos; Thanks to dtilt, Ranno has a plethora of true strings at a number of percentages that can combo into his kill confirms or send offstage.
  • Good disadvantage;
  • Molasses air drift and mediocre up special: Ranno has extremely slow air drift which means that he can struggle to recover from far distances if he doesn't have the proper setups.
  • Lack of disjoint; Ranno has the lowest amount of disjoint for any character in the game making several moves either trade with him or flat out beat certain attacks.
  • Learning curve on recovery; Ranno's recovery has several layers in bubble, up special, and forward special players need to be familiar with in order to recover at higher levels.
  • Low airspeed (struggles to land): Ranno needs to use commital specials in order to change his momentum or recover from far distances.
  • Unique parry punish: If Ranno has his tongue parried, it'll stun him in a unique animation that lasts longer than the usual stun does.
  • Chronically bald: God his head is so shiny.
Unique Mechanics

Poison

Ranno's Strong Attacks and Neutral Special have the ability to poison the opponent for up to 4 points of poison. While poisoned, opponents will take 1% each time they do an attack, however they will take off a point of poison when they hit you and they'll take off all poison if they parry you. The amount of poison an opponent has will also extend the amount of time they're in bubble for.

Super Jump

While Ranno is in a crouching state, you can perform a super jump, which is a slightly higher full hop. You can use to juggle opponents in the air from a lot higher, or waveland onto high platforms and cover space a lot faster, such frozen fortress' side platforms, rock wall's top platforms, tower of heaven's top platform, etc

  • Ranno throws out hitboxes in quick succession in order to rack up poison.
  • Not ideal as rapid jabs don't tend to be very strong without a built in finisher to knock opponents away.
All of Ranno's jabs excluding rapid jab have endlag that can be cancelled early with down tilt or forward tilt. they can only be turned around if the jab connects with an opponent however

  • One of Ranno's main tools for being able get his combos started. Can start confirming into Up Strong at around mid to high percent for most characters which can help net you a quick kill.
  • While it may seem like a good move to just throw out in order to get those combos and kills, it's still somewhat stubby and has a considerable amount of endlag on whiff so it's not ideal to just throw it out willy nilly.
