Sagat

Sagat is a fighter of Muay Thai and a recurring character in the Street Fighter series. In the events of SF1, Sagat hears of a young martial artist named Ryu who has been defeating many Muay Thai warriors. Sagat challenges Ryu in hopes to defend the honor of Muay Thai, and in the battle gets defeated by Ryu's Shoryuken, which left a massive scar on his chest. Sagat then swore he would get his revenge on Ryu. Sagat is an amazing defensive character in SF1MR. Sagat is a monster in neutral by controlling the screen with long pokes like 2B, 2D, 6D, and both of his Tiger Shots (236P)/(236K). Sagat's range on his quick pokes alongside a wide variety of amazing and versatile antiairs makes him a big roadblock for approaches. Combined with the power Sagat has in neutral, he also hits like a freight train, him and Adon share blistering levels of damage off low pokes and super conversions. Whenever you make your way past the Tiger Shots, Sagat has great reversals to reset back to shooting more. One of Sagat's most notable and best features is his large health, as he is the final boss character of SF1. Sagat can take more hits to survive on the opponent landing openings or whittling away at him with infinite blockstrings.

Sagat is well rounded in many areas where a character can succeed, but a few downsides is to be considered. Sagat has to maintain his life lead throughout the match, because his lack of any mixup tools like an overhead, throw, or crossup means he's forced to play the timer. His hurtbox is huge too, hurting his own approach against fireballs and disjoints, or allowing moves that would otherwise whiff on crouch to hit like Eagle's Lariat, setting up true infinite blockstrings for that matchup, or Sagat's own Tiger Cannon (236236P), making the ditto very volatile in who gets the first super stocked.

With Sagats amazing versatility in his kit with high damage and great defense, he's unanimously considered the best character in SF1MR, and Sagat is a very worth-while choice for anyone picking up the game.

Pros Cons
  • Neutral: With a wide variety of pokes, access to fireballs, and great antiairs, Sagat is great at controlling neutral.
  • High Damage: Sagat has high damage routes involving his Tiger Raid (214214K) super, 2D > 214K, and linking from cl.C.
  • Defense: Sagat has the highest health with a meterless invuln reversal. Sagat can respond to offensive situations very well.
  • Meter Utility: Sagats access to supers are amazing with the shortest duration meter-build taunt, and his supers are fantastic in many areas.
  • Huge Hurtbox: Sagat's hurtbox is one of the largest, meaning combos are less finicky/work on Sagat, or moves that would whiff on crouch hit on crouching Sagat.
  • Mixless: Without an overhead or throw, Sagat doesn't have great ways of opening up the opponent, making it harder to force back a life lead.

Standing Normals

A close range mashing and pressure option, this 5A has great hitstun and is good for confirms, but has an above-average tendency to whiff on crouchers, it can even whiff on standing Joe due to proximity guard hurtbox shifting.

A close range quick poke tool with a low hitbox. This is useful for counterpokes and empty cancels, but doesn't do much for combo extension.

Based on the far version, this button is an okay poke and antiair. This has an enormous amount of pushback and is a far proximity normal, meaning you can create more distance with this to throw more Tiger Shots, and this can also stuff air approaches well.

  • Air Unblockable

Good poke and amazing antiair in neutral. This move is great at walling tell characters, but most of the time it will whiff from afar or on crouch, and although it isnt -, it's frame advantage isnt anything to ride home about. Where this move is spectacular is it's antiair abilities, with the combination of its amazing vertical and lateral range and air unblockable property, this is a key reason jumping on Sagat is difficult.

Crouching Normals

Another close range panic mash and pressure tool, this button is very similar to 5A with better gatlings and it doesn't whiff on crouch.

Crouch Light Kick
2B

Damage Guard Startup Active Recovery Cancels Adv on Hit Adv on Block
28 Low 3 4 3 GA/SP/SU +8 -4

By far one of the best low pokes in the game and one of Sagat's main tools in neutral. It has amazing range and frame advantage to link into itself multiple times, or cancel into 2D/Tiger Knee. It's also fast enough paired with its horizontal range to find itself being a great option to link into.

Crouch Heavy Punch
2C
SF1MR Sagat 2C.PNG

A good damage normal that's mainly for combo filler off 2A, though you can true blockstring into 2B for creating space in blockstrings, or cancel it straight into Tiger Shots.

Crouch Heavy Kick
2D

A good low poke and great combo ender. This is a main ender cancelled off 2B, and it can even combo into Tiger Knee or Tiger Cannon for high damage combo extensions. The deceptively high hitbox also means this is vulnerable to Retsu's and Eagle's parries.

A long range, active jump normal for poking and safejumps. All of Sagat's jump normals have great range, but it should be mentioned Sagat's jump hurtbox is very wide.

  • Taunt builds 1 bar of meter instantly, regardless of if Sagat is hit out of it or not, hence the 1 frame startup.

Arguably the best taunt in the game, this is the shortest duration taunt in SF1MR. You can set it up very safely in neutral or on knockdowns, even 2 of them in some situations.

Unique Attacks

116 Mid 6 9 7 N/A +13 -2

A close-range active normal with great combo potential. Because its a close normal, you'll always be bound to get a link from it with 2B. This is also a good meaty.

Forward Heavy Kick

A great horizontal poke for walling the opponent. Amazing hitbox and active frames to shut down many approaches.

Special Attacks

High Tiger Shot
236A/C
SF1MR Sagat 236P.PNG
Damage Guard Startup Active Recovery Cancels Adv on Hit Adv on Block
78 Mid 8 Traveling 34 N/A 0 -5

One of Sagat's iconic fireballs. It travels full screen with a high hitbox, and has good frame data for fireball wars. It has mediocre frame advantage by itself but the pushback is very nice for continuous zoning. The caveat is that it can be crouched, in which case you would use Low Tiger Shot.

Low Tiger Shot
236B/D
SF1MR Sagat 236K.PNG
Damage Guard Startup Active Recovery Cancels Adv on Hit Adv on Block
78 Mid 8 Traveling 34 N/A -3 -7

The bread to High Tiger Shot's butter. Unlike High Tiger Shot, this can not be crouched and acts more typical to regular fireballs. This also can be jumped over more easily and has worse frame advantage. There's a time and place for each Tiger Shot in Sagat's kit.

D 48,48 Mid 2 18 11 N/A KD -6
  • Frames 1 through 12 Invulnerable; Air Unblockable
  • Unlike mainline Street Fighter titles, has a 214 motion input

B version travels less far laterally and vertically, D goes farther in both ways. Pointing to a specific strength to this move is difficult, Tiger Knee does a bit of everything. It has beginning invuln frames for being a great antiair, reversal, and anti-fireball tool; it's capability to be spaced makes it great to space as an occasional poke and pressure tool, and it's a very reliable combo ender and combo extender off of your Tiger Raid combos. While it is punishable on block up close, and it can whiff when spaced too far and moreso on crouchers, this an amazing swiss army knife of a move.

  • Frames 1 through 18 Invulnerable

An amazing fireball super in Sagat's kit. It can be used as a reactionary fireball punish and fireball war winner in neutral, although done raw it whiffs on crouchers. The raw damage from this is massive and does good chip on block. You can also fit this in your combos, as it converts off 2D, and in the corner 2D > 236236P can lead into a Tiger Knee.

Amazing confirm super with huge damage. This works in many of your typical confirm routes, and picks up great damage and a great knockdown for two taunts. In the corner you can pick up two Tiger Knees for amazing combo damage.
