In Depth Overview
Mario is a short middleweight that has relatively balanced attributes across the board, along with decent attacks that give the player a rough idea of how to work with a character's tools. Mario has strong Smash Attacks, a useful projectile, versatile throws and an exceptional amount of useful attacks. Mario overall can be seen as a jack of all trades fighter in theory, but in practice he's more seen as a rushdown/brawler fighter.
To begin, Mario has exceptional mobility, coupled with his quite fast attacks and multiple combo starters he excels from up close. He possibly has the easiest combo routes in the game, especially when it comes to juggles, as his Up Aerial is one of the best ones in the game for it's exceptionally wide hitboxes, low knockback and it's short frame duration make it very useful on the ground or mid-air. His Neutral Air can break combos pretty well, and his Back Air is his second largest range aerial attack that can be spaced out very well on top of it's exceptional KO ability. As for Smash Attacks, his most reliable moves are his Up Smash and Forward Smash, both being very solid kill options against opponents offstage and on the stage. In addition, his throws are very above average in comparison to the rest of the cast, with a few good combo throws, Up Throw being the best among them, and his Back Throw being a very strong KO throw. He can also use these throws to mix up the opponent.
His Special moves are also quite diverse, with his Fireball (Neutral Special) being a very good tool in neutral or edgeguarding due to the disruptive knockback of the attack, Super Jump Punch, his Up Special, is a pretty solid recovery option, but it is also a terrific kill option by the blast line and combo finisher. Mario Tornado, his Down Special, returns from Super Smash Bros. Melee after being turned into a Down Aerial for official titles, and it has more utility due to it's somewhat reliable multihit properties, and much like Super Smash Bros. has a specific lower hitbox that meteor smashes opponents. His most notable Special attack is his Cape (Side Special), which flips the opponent around along with their controls for about 30-40 frames. Because of this, Mario's edgeguarding potential is fantastic, with Cape's reversing hitboxes being able to gimp recoveries and can also reflect projectiles, which makes it valuable in a variety of ranges.
That's not to say Mario is not without flaws. His most glaring weaknesses is his recovery, while significantly buffed from official games overall, still makes him very ineffective against edgeguards and semi-spikes, especially since all three of his recovery moves seem to leave him open for a large amount of time. His KO options are also below average as he may have many combo starters, but he lacks a good amount of reliable KO attacks. While all of his Smash Attacks can get the job done, his Down Smash isn't safe on shield, his Super Jump Punch has to be under specific conditions, his Back Aerial is short in comparison to other fighters his Back Throw may be easy to DI and his Forward Air, while having an exceptional early sourspot buff, is still too weak to work around due to it's endlag and his Meteor, while just as powerful as the official titles, is easily negated by Meteor Cancelling if the opponent has a double jump stocked up before they were hit.
Finally, his attributes. They're very well runded, but many characters outclass him in all sorts of ways. Notable examples include the edgeguarding capabilities of Klonoa, the combo ability of the Street Fighter cast and the Spacies, the camping abilities of Shadow, the recovery potential of Snake, the overall speed of Sonic, the overall power of Bowser, and the range capabilities of Rayman and Goku. The last fact harms him a lot more significantly than the rest of those stats, as Mario's range is overall quite small in comparison. Because of this, he primarily relies on being up close and personal, which benefits rushdown style fighters more than he does. He has to be careful depending on the match up because of this, and on top of a majority of characters having disjointed hitboxes on their attacks make Mario have a rough time against those moves. Due to this, he be seen as an honest character due to how in line a majority of his hitboxes are.
Overall, Mario has a good mix of strengths and weaknesses. Because of his above average mobility, he can give opponents a rough time to escape his strings in tandem with their fast startup frames and varied uses, and it makes it easy for him to run away from their counter attacks and gain the advantage again. Players need to keep in mind that they have to always fight among close quarters and he may need to often rely on reads to get effective (or stylish) KOs. He also needs to be careful off stage, as being reckless will often result in a stock lost as fast as he can stomp on a Goomba, and he can be gimped very easily. If you're looking to learn the game with an easy to pick up and play character or you want a character with nearly everything you could ask for, then play the hero and take Mario out for a spin.
