Feature differences between console versions

PlayStation 4 - “Virtual-On Masterpiece 1995-2001” ver 1.03

  • Twin-Stick support with TANITA’s “Twin-Stick Project Z” (limited availability).

- Offline multiplayer removed. Paid service required for any kind of multiplayer.
- Replay system removed. No way to view opponents side or online replays.
- Color customization not shown on opponents character.
- Score attack mode removed.
- Custom player icon removed. No player icons .
- Quick messages removed.
- 4:3 display mode removed.
- Online lobbies don’t allow multiple simultaneous matches.

= Virtuaroid customization (player only)
= Optional updated graphics mode that alters lighting.
= Online multiplayer. Netcode is around the same quality as X360.
= Online lobbies with live spectating.
= Widescreen mode.
= Able to switch character inside online lobbies (added in 1.03)

+ Online tournament modes: normal single elimination, round robin, team tournaments.

Xbox 360, Xbox One & Xbox Series (backwards compatibility) - “Virtual-On OT”

  • Offline multiplayer via System Link (direct ethernet connection between consoles)
  • Twin-Stick support with HORI’s “Real Arcade Twin Stick EX”.

- Custom player icon removed. Gamer picture was used instead.
- Quick messages removed.
- Split-Screen multiplayer removed.
- Minor gameplay changes (due to physics calculation).

Dreamcast - Virtual-On Oratorio Tangram Ver. 5.45

  • Offline multiplayer via System Link or Split-Screen.
  • Twin-Stick support with SEGA’s Dreamcast Twin Stick.
  • Limited gamepad configuration options.

- Gamepad control has poor implementation: jump input is not read while rotation is pressed & other issues. Can be mostly worked around if playing on emulator.
- Older release, does not match final arcade version. Gameplay and virtuaroid balance differences.
- Lacks virtuaroids Stein-Vok, Apharmd C and 10/80 Special.

+ Replay system.
+ Virtuaroid, icon & quick message customization. Compatible with 5.66 arcade via VMU.

Gameplay differences compared to original 5.66 Arcade version

Gameplay differences are generally minor.

  • Widescreen display. Larger field of view. It’s easier to see attacks off to the sides. Can watch your opponent even after they have exited lock-on area.
  • Explosion-type attacks expand speed reduced over 360, more arcade accurate ?
  • Hit detection on VR is less lenient than arcade, it is slightly harder to get hit.
  • Unknown

! Fixed/removed in patch 1.03: Many VRs gained instant melee cancel routes not in original game.

Xbox 360 / Xbox One (backwards compatibility) - “Virtual-On OT”

  • Widescreen display option. Larger field of view. It’s easier to see attacks off to the sides. Can watch your opponent even after they have exited lock-on area.
  • Increased movement speed drop when near opponent.
  • All explosion-type attacks are slightly stronger: Multiple-stage attacks that cause explosions generate/expand more quickly. For example grenade attacks or Raiden RW.
  • Projectile priorities slightly altered (attack specific). Combined with the above, explosions attacks have slightly better priority because they may activate/trade earlier.
  • Other multi-stage attacks are slightly faster: Bal-bados Vulcan Bit and House.
  • Hit detection on VR is less lenient than arcade, it is slightly harder to get hit.
  • Damage is delayed by a few frames from landing a hit.
