The Ninja

Story

The Ninja is one of the Devil Knights, and as his name might imply, he is a ninja. A Choujin ninja, that is. As one might expect, he makes use of all sorts ninja techniques his theme song terms "Japanese Magic", i.e. Ninjutsu. His signature technique, Jungyaku Jizai no Jutsu, is a move where The Ninja uses his super speed to swap places with his opponent. Aside from his status as a Devil Knight, his other notable exploit was his tenure as part of Kinnikuman Soldier's Choujin Blood Brigade, an all-star team of fan-favorite Choujins gathered by Kinnikuman Soldier.

Gameplay

The Ninja is the archetypal fragile speedster, with quick buttons, extensive strings, and unique specials. His strings let him mix up and throw off parry timings, keeping an unfamiliar opponent constantly guessing. To compensate, his health is low, and more glaringly, he does very little damage; he is tied for the lowest damage rating in the game, at 11. This is worse in practice than it might initially look on paper, because Ninja's strings, while useful for mixups, are much less so for combos. As a result, The Ninja is often fighting a constant uphill battle where he might need 5-6 good hits to win a round, while the opponent might be able to do the same with only 3.

Furthermore, the backturn hitstun changes in the PS2 version of MGP2 does not do him any favors. Ninja's 421S is a unique hitgrab that sets up backturn combos, helping Ninja's combo game somewhat. However, since backturn combos were largely removed in the transition from arcade to PS2, Ninja loses out on even this. He still has 421S combos even on PS2, but they are significantly more limited than in Arcade.

Counter move that is active frame 1, countering everything but supers.

  • On successful counter, this move will "copy" the move that hits it; for example, countering a throw will cause Ninja to do that throw on the opponent, while countering a launcher will cause the opponent to be launched instead.
  • Although the counter copies the countered move's attribute and opponent's meter gain value, the damage will be scaled to Ninja's damage rating of 11 (see formula below). As Ninja's damage rating is tied for lowest in the game, against every character besides other damage rating 11 characters, the copied move will do noticeably less damage than their original counterpart.
  • This counter does not actually have a recovery; it is active for the entire 52 frames of its animation. If a strike is countered, Ninja still needs to finish the full animation of this counter, effectively making the remainder frames of the counter the "recovery".
  • Countering an opponent's strike while Ninja or the opponent has True Green KKD active will not reduce the countered move's hitstun.
