Mobile Suit Gundam: Ex Revue/Gelgoog

Overview
Overview

The first mass-produced Zeon mobile suit to carry beam weaponry, Gelgoog was introduced to the front lines at the tail end of the One Year War. Piloted by Soldier 1 (the same pilot who's in the Zaku) and equipped with the Beam Naginata and the Beam Rifle that Char's Gelgoog makes excellent use of, Solider 1 unfortunately should've stayed in the Zaku as Gelgoog is the worst character in EX Revue. While Gelgoog doesn't particularly do much bad per se, he's very much outclassed and bullied by other characters thanks to his lack of reversals and good anti airs. While Gelgoog is the weakest, that doesn't mean he doesn't excel at anything either. Gelgoog's chip damage is no joke, easily taking a quarter of health with one blockstring.

Playstyle
Pros Cons
  • Comically High Chip Damage: Gelgoog can do an absurd amount of chip damage using one blockstring and even be safe while doing it.
  • Gets Around Zoners: Grand Cutter allows Gelgoog to low profile most fireballs and score a knockdown in the process.
  • No (Good) Reversal: Since Gelgoog lacks a good reversal he can be difficult to escape pressure and Gelgoog has to hold a lot of okizeme that other characters don’t.
  • Lacks a Cohesive Gameplan: Gelgoog has a unique problem where his special and normal moves allow him to play almost any way, just not very well. He can both rush down and play keepaway but doesn’t have the best tools to do either well enough to outclass any other character.

Normals

5A
GEXR Gelgoog 5a.PNG
Damage Guard Startup Active Recovery Hit Adv Block Adv Special Cancel

Fast, long and disjointed. Pretty solid jab for harassing walking, but unfortunately whiffs on crouching opponents.

cl.B
GEXR Gelgoog cl5b.PNG
Damage Guard Startup Active Recovery Hit Adv Block Adv Special Cancel
- mid - - - - - Yes

Gelgoog's only close range button. The range on it is very short, although given it's status as a proximity normal that isn't really an issue.

f.B
GEXR Gelgoog 5b.PNG
Damage Guard Startup Active Recovery Hit Adv Block Adv Special Cancel
- Mid - - - - - Yes

Similar to 5A but a bit taller and a lot slower. Gelgoog's best anti-air.

5C
GEXR Gelgoog 5c.PNG
Damage Guard Startup Active Recovery Hit Adv Block Adv Special Cancel
- Mid - - - - - Yes

An incredible button. Long range and good damage, the main flaw of this attack is that Gelgoog's hurtbox shifts forward a lot after the attack's hitboxes become active making whiff punishes much easier.

2A
GEXR Gelgoog 2a.PNG
Damage Guard Startup Active Recovery Hit Adv Block Adv Special Cancel
- Low - - - - - Yes

C.Gelgoog's main low. Fairly average 2A for this game. Easily confirmed into a flash kick for a knockdown.

2B
GEXR Gelgoog 2b.PNG
Damage Guard Startup Active Recovery Hit Adv Block Adv Special Cancel
- Mid - - - - - Yes

Not a low despite appearances. Still a fairly strong button as it's fast, shrinks Gelgoog's hitbox on startup, goes over lows when it's active, and is fairly safe due to the pushback.

2C
GEXR Gelgoog 2c.PNG
Damage Guard Startup Active Recovery Hit Adv Block Adv Special Cancel
- Low - - - - - Yes

Gelgoog's actual sweep. Hits at roundstart and sets up for a meaty fireball. Slow and extends Gelgoog's hurtbox well before it's active, so it's prone to getting thrown or outpoked.

Jumping Normals

j.A
GEXR Gelgoog Ja.PNG
Damage Guard Startup Active Recovery Hit Adv Block Adv Special Cancel
- High - - - - - -

Fast jumping light. Decent disjoint but underwhelming angle for air-to-air, and not low enough for an instant overhead. Gets outshined by other jumping normals.

j.B
GEXR Gelgoog Jb.PNG

- High - - - - - -

Fairly long jump-in. Good speed and range for air-to-airing.

j.2B
GEXR Gelgoog J2b.PNG

- - - - - - - -

Gelgoog's best air normal. Huge hitbox in the front and back, active for years, and about as fast as j.A. Very good crossup.

j.C
GEXR Gelgoog Jc.PNG

Big jump-in. Does huge damage if it lands and can cross up at some angles.

Special Moves

Beam Rifle
[4]6X
GEXR Gelgoog sonicboom.PNG
Damage Guard Startup Active Recovery Hit Adv Block Adv Special Cancel
- Mid - - - - - -

A fireball with fairly quick recovery and a fast charge time. Decent damage both on hit on block, but it isn't too much of a threat compared to C.Gelgoog's fireball thanks to Gelgoog's lackluster anti-airs.

A+B+C
GEXR Gelgoog ABC.PNG
Damage Guard Startup Active Recovery Hit Adv Block Adv Special Cancel
- Mid - - - - - -

Gelgoog's "reversal". Gelgoog spins his staff to attack the opponent, and can be moved back and forth during the attack. Fully invincible for a few frames on startup. This move does tons of chip damage and then some, and knocks down on hit. It's a great combo ender but with how long it lasts on hit, block or whiff it's hard to make much of an argument for using it outside of combos or blockstrings. Be careful using this attack carelessly on block, it's incredibly unsafe if not spaced properly.

Multi-hitting stabs. Fairly decent hitbox at first but degrades quickly, very fast for its size however, and does good chip damage. Pushes Gelgoog out very far on block so it's hard to punish.

Grand Cutter
646X
GEXR Gelgoog 646x.PNG
Damage Guard Startup Active Recovery Hit Adv Block Adv Special Cancel
- Mid - - - - - -

Gelgoog rushes forward and slashes with his staff, knocking down on hit and shrinking his hurtbox during the charge to go under most fireballs. Depending on which button is used for the attack gelgoog will travel farther across the screen.

Combo 2A > 5A > 6A+B+C Any ? All A quick 3 piece combo that knocks down. Spacing may make 6A+B+C not connect in time. Link
