JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R/Jean Pierre Polnareff

From Mizuumi Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Introduction

The boastful, yet honorable ally from the third part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Stardust Crusaders, Jean Pierre Polnareff is a straightforward, honest character with large attacks that control the mid-range with ease.

For neutral, Polnareff can keep opponents at bay with his gigantic Stand On buttons and convert from any range he wants, although he needs to spend meter for max range conversions. Due to the nature of his large buttons, however, they have more recovery than most normals, which makes them more unsafe; Polnareff needs to have good situational awareness and utilize Flash Cancel to make himself safe if those buttons are either whiffed or blocked. In Stand Off, "Start packing for hell!" can be used to check opponents from any range and pressure them with any of its follow-ups, although it is a very risky move to use due to the fact that Polnareff is not able to act during its duration. "My secret weapon!" is a projectile than can be fired at multiple angles, but carries much more recovery than the average projectile, meaning Polnareff's forced to Flash Cancel it to remain safe if the opponent avoids it.

On offense, Polnareff has to make use of stagger pressure with his lights to frame trap opponents. He has typical stagger pressure in Stand Off but with Stand On, he's able to poke from far away with s.5L and s.2L, making it very hard for the opponent to press buttons to counteract. Polnareff is equipped with multiple Overheads like "Slices and dices!", "Kiss my sword!" and a command overhead in Stand On to force opponents to block high and keep them guessing on defense, while also being able to convert from any of the overheads on a successful hit. His HHA, "Off comes the armor!", is an install that greatly buffs his offensive pressure by creating 2 afterimages that make any attack that utilizes Silver Chariot have 2 additional hits (excluding Throw and GHA) while also adding additional damage to those attacks.

On defense, Polnareff struggles more than most characters due to a lack of any solid reversals: HHA can't be used as a reversal since it's an install super; and GHA has lots of startup and hits further out, not making it reliable to punish gaps in the opponent's blockstrings or catch jump-ins. This means Polnareff will have to rely on universal system mechanics like Stylish Guard and Stylish Evade to get out of disadvantage most of the time. Polnareff also has difficulties against aerial approaches: attacks like s.5M, the L version of "My secret weapon!" and the L version of "Cuts everywhere else!" are all capable of anti-airing, but none of them have any invulnerability, making them big risks to catch aerial opponents with.

  • Silver Chariot: Polnareff's Stand, Silver Chariot, grants him long range with his normals while in Stand On, in addition to increasing his walk speed.
  • Off comes the armor!: For the cost of one HH Gauge, Polnareff can gain access to multi-hitting normals utilizing Silver Chariot for a limited time, an ability reminiscent of Yang's "Seiei Enbu" install from Street Fighter III: Third Strike.
Playstyle
JJASBR Polnareff Small Icon.png Jean Pierre Polnareff is a Stand character who utilizes his large normals to thrive at the mid-range.
Pros Cons
  • Large Buttons: Attacks utilizing Silver Chariot are very large and can allow Polnareff to attack from far away distances, making his neutral very threatening.
  • Anti-Zoning: Between the range of his normals, his "Reap as you sow!" projectile reflector and "Hurry up and die!" being an effective neutral skipping tool, Polnareff's tools can reliably counter zoning opponents.
  • Meter Conservative: Polnareff generates lots of meter from his somewhat long combos, meaning he's rarely ever starving to use his resources.
  • Strong Reset Options: The ability to restand with "Hurry up and die!" gives Polnareff access to resets at many points in his combos. Multiple setups allow him to make use of a 'Kami Frame Reset', making sure the opponent is limited in defensive options against his high/lows and strike/throws.
  • Subpar Movement in Stand Off: Polnareff's walk and run speeds in Stand Off are slower than most, essentially forcing him to switch into Stand On in order to have decent movement. He's also one of the few characters that cannot use a Special Move during a dash.
  • Poor Reversals: Polnareff lacks any solid reversals, making it difficult to get out of disadvantage without relying on universal defensive mechanics.

    • Silver Chariot's afterimages will always hit Mid, and do not inflict hitstop.
  • Polnareff is forced into Stand Off once install ends.
    • Has an ending animation that renders Polnareff defenseless for a short amount of time, but said animation can be special-canceled or Flash Canceled to potentially keep him safe. The animation will still trigger if Polnareff recovers out of hitstun after the HHA duration has ended.
