Introduction

Developed exclusively for the Sega Mega Drive, Yu Yu Hakusho: Makyou Toitsusen is Treasures very first fighting game. Originally developed under the title "Axion", it was later reworked into the licensed title that we have today. The title (henceforth referred to as "YuYuMD") was originally only released in Japan as a smaller printed run from Treasure, and later in Brazil by TecToy under the renamed title "Sunset Fighters". Even though Treasure is known for developing with the west in mind, Yu Yu Hakusho's lack of presence in the west at the time is cited as what lead to its inevitable region exclusivity- unlike other successful Treasure titles on the Mega Drive that received localizations, such as Gunstar Heroes. Given that Yu Yu Hakusho's Portuguese localization was airing at the time, as well as TecToys history of long-standing support for both the Master System and Mega Drive, YuYuMD had a fair amount of success attached to its Brazillian release as well.

YuYuMD is a 2.5D fighting game featuring a cast of 11 different characters comprised of most of the shows leading characters leading up to the end of the Sensui arc, with a "lane-changing" mechanic similar to fighting games like Real Bout Fatal Fury Special, or platformers like Shantae. Its gameplay style and presentation would largely serve as a base for other fighting games developed by Treasure: sharing extremely noticeable similarities with Guardian Heroes, as well as Bleach: Dark Souls. While a majority of competitive players gather around the 1v1 aspect, an extremely notable feature of YuYuMD was its 4-player Tag-Battle and Battle Royale modes. With very little slowdown during battles, it was touted as an impressive feat for the Mega Drive at the time of its release. During some game festivals, Japanese players will still meet and organize 4-player Battle Royale and Tag-Battle tournaments to this day!

While there is plenty more to cover in Controls, How to Play, and Characters, YuYuMDs simplistic control scheme combined with familiar 2D fighting game inputs and new interesting movement mechanics make for a classic "easy to pick-up, hard to master" fighting game.

Controls

Important note about controllers: Regarding what kind of controller you intend to use to play YuYuMD, please note that the game will function exactly as described with a 3-Button Genesis or Mega Drive controller just as it would with a 6-Button controller. However, there are certain techniques and important movement options (covered in more detail over at How to Play) that will either be unavailable to you or extremely difficult to do without the shortcuts offered by the 6-Button controller; most notably the exclusion of having a dedicated command for YY LC.png Lane Change.

Directional Pad

The D-pad is fairly straightforward in terms of movement, but does come with some notable exceptions that are unique compared to other fighting games:

1. Basic Movement
  • Pressing T Left.png and T Right.png will move the player Left and Right across their individual lanes.
  • If the player is facing T Right.png and presses T Left.png, their character will first go through a turnaround animation before beginning to move.
    • This applies to anywhere on the screen!

2. Dashing
  • Double tapping T Right.pngT Right.png while facing T Right.png will result in a T DashR.png Forward Dash.
  • Likewise, Facing T Left.png and double tapping T Left.pngT Left.png will result in a T DashL.png Forward Dash.
  • If the player is facing T Right.png and inputs either T DashL.png, T Left.pngT Left.png, or YY C.png+YY B.png, it will result in a Back Dash. The Inverse is also true if facing T Left.png, resulting in a T Right.png Back Dash; just as the Forward Dash works.
    • Note!: Both T DashL.png and T DashR.png are mapped as dedicated commands to the X and Z buttons respectively when using a 6-Button Controller, but they do not have the same canceling properties that Forward Dash has when using Double Tap (T Right.pngT Right.png or T Left.pngT Left.png) to Dash! For this reason, this wiki will almost always assume the player is Double Tapping (T Right.pngT Right.png or T Left.pngT Left.png) to Forward Dash when using T DashL.png or T DashR.png for explanations.
    • Almost all dashes have varying degrees of YY Clash.png Clash properties. This, the above and more are covered more thoroughly in How to Play.

3. Jumping
  • Pressing T Up.png once will Jump, and pressing T Up.png again in Midair will Double Jump. Pressing T UpLeft.png or T UpRight.png will Jump Diagonally in either direction. You can also Double Jump Diagonally, or use your second jump to change directions; i.e T UpRight.png for the first Jump, then T UpLeft.png in mid-air to Jump Backwards.
  • Quickly Double Tapping T Up.pngT Up.png, T UpRight.pngT UpRight.png, or T UpLeft.pngT UpLeft.png will result in a Short Hop in the chosen direction; similar to Hops in the KOF series. Short Hops can be done Forwards and Backwards, so once again, mind your orientation!
  • Holding T Down.png enters a Crouching state.
    • Just like with T DashR.png, be careful of your orientation! If the player is facing T Right.png and inputs T UpLeft.png, this may result in a Backwards Jump, since the Jump will occur before a turnaround animation is performed. This should not be taken as inherently negative, however, since sometimes it is better to approach with a Backwards Jump. More on this in How to Play.

Face Buttons

By default, the YY A.png (Heavy Attack) and YY C.png (Block) buttons are mapped to A and C respectively. These two inputs can be swapped for each individual player in either the Options menu or by holding Start while selecting a stage. In an effort to provide a more universal notation throughout this Wiki, we will almost always refer to these inputs as either YY A.png or YY C.png instead of the default button assignments.

1. Attacks
  • The YY A.png Heavy Attack and YY B.png Light Attack buttons have additional Command Normals depending on if the player is holding T Left.png or T Right.png.
  • Throws can be performed by Holding T Left.png or T Right.png and Tapping YY A.png while close to the opponent, similar to other classic fighting games.
  • YY A.png Has an additional Command Normal when Airborne by inputting T Up.pngYY A.png.
  • T Down.pngYY A.png is a classic Sweep.
  • Every attack in YuYuMD has varying degrees of YY Clash.png Clash properties. Check out System Mechanics and How to Play for more.
  • As with any fighting game, there are plenty of Special Moves and Supers (though technically called "Desperation Attacks" in YuYuMD) using various combinations of inputs with YY A.png and YY B.png. Check out the Characters page to take a look at the cast and see what your favorite fighter can do!

2. Blocking
  • Holding the YY C.png button will Block both Mid and Overhead Attacks in whatever direction the player was last facing.
  • Holding T Down.pngYY C.png will Block Low Attacks.
    • The direction of your YY C.png Block is based on your current orientation. Be careful not to input an opposite direction T Left.png T Right.png while Blocking oncoming attacks! You can still turn around while blocking, so you may get hit from behind if you face the wrong way!

  • While Holding YY C.png, tap YY B.png to quickly perform a T DashL.png Back Dash out of YY C.png Block.
  • While Holding YY C.png, tap T Up.png to YY LC.png Lane Change. For many reasons, this input is vastly inferior to using the Y Button for the YY LC.png Lane Change Command.
    • These both have many uses outside of their intended purposes. Read more in How to Play.

Shortcuts and Holds

1. Shortcuts
  • As mentioned in the D-Pad information above, the X and Z buttons act as shortcuts for both T DashR.png Forwards and T DashL.png Backwards Dashing. Peculiarly, they do not however share the same Canceling properties as Double Tapping (T Left.pngT Left.png or T Right.pngT Right.png) to Dash.
  • As mentioned in the Blocking information, The Y Button is a dedicated command for YY LC.png Lane Changing- normally input with YY C.pngT Up.png.
    • While using YY C.png + YY B.png to Back Dash does have its important use cases, the shortcut buttons are rather polarizing. The lack of utility offered by X and Z Dashing compared to Double Tapping (T Left.pngT Left.png or T Right.pngT Right.png) makes them rather useless, while having the Y Button available for YY LC.png Lane Changing is a practically invaluable tool; making the shortcut row a major necessity. Read more in How to Play.

  • Taunting is performed by Pressing A, B and C (YY ABC.png) all at once. Aside from playing a unique animation, preforming a Taunt lowers the opponents special meter for every taunt activation! Each Characters Taunt is unique, and lasts different amounts of time. This means that some characters taunts can drain the opponents special meter faster than others! See the System Mechanics page for a full breakdown of Taunt drain speeds.

  • Soft Resets can be performed by Holding YY ABC.png and pressing Start at any point; stopping the game and resetting at the SEGA startup screen. This is particularly useful for quickly ending Button Checks or correcting misclicks on the menus. Please reffer to the Rulesets section regarding Soft Reseting in a Tournament.
2. Holds
  • YY Charge.png Charging can be performed by holding down either YY A.png or YY B.png alone, or with any two button combination while YY C.png Blocking using the buttons YY A.png, YY B.png, and YY LC.png.
  • Performing any special move will use a small percentage of your special meter, making YY Charge.png Charging an invaluable shortcut that must be worked into your gameplan.
  • YY Charge.png Charging can be activated immedietely following many actions, so long as either YY A.png or YY B.png continues to be held. In particular, if you are in a YY C.png Blocking state, combining the YY C.png with any two button combination of the buttons YY A.png, YY B.png or YY LC.png will cancel the block and begin YY Charge.png charging. Releasing either YY A.png, YY B.png or YY LC.png while continuing to hold YY C.png Block, will immedietely revert back to the blocking state.
  • The player is vulnerable while Charging. Choose wisely when to YY Charge.png Charge!

FAQ

How do I play Online?

It's extremely simple to play YuYuMD online! We use the popular PC platform Fightcade 2! Fightcade 2 uses FBNeo with a customized GGPO for its MegaDrive selection, which means that we have Rollback Netcode!

  • Navigate to one of the Fightcade links above to make an account and install the platform. Once you're in, you should see a home screen similar to this:

FC2 HP.jpg

  • Afterwards, click on the magnifying glass icon to the left and search for these terms to find YuYuMD:

YYSearchAll.png

YYSearchMT.pngYYSearchSF.png

  • Searching with "yuyu" like in the topmost image will list ALL of the YuYuMD channels: yuyumt (the JP Makyou version), yuyusf (the Brazillian Sunset Fighters version) and yuyumte (the English Translation hack of yuyusf).
  • if you're looking for a specific version, you can add the bottom left and rightmost prefix examples ("mt" and "sf") to the end of "yuyu" to narrow your search!

  • Once you've joined a room, simply hit "[Test Game]" in the upper right (assuming you have the correct ROMs for the lobby) to launch the game and change your controller mappings, audio/video settings, etc! If you want to challenge another player who is available, simply right-click over their name and send a challenge! You cannot, however, challenge someone who is set to away or is playing another game.

"But I don't have the ROMs/I'm getting errors when launching! What do I do?"
  • We cannot legally distribute the ROMs for any of the titles, so you are partially on your own there. We do, however, highly recommend you look into the Fightcade JSONs, as it makes joining any and all of the YuYuMD rooms extremely straightforward.
  • Again, I stress, we cannot distribute the games themselves, but if you are still having difficulties with setup, you're welcome to reach out to the Treasure Fighters Discord and we'll do what we can
