This section assumes you're familiar with both the controls and the basic mechanics of the game, so check those wiki pages out if you're having some trouble trying to follow the concepts in this section.

There are also some videos to help illustrate some concepts on this page. If you cannot see them, try viewing this wiki page with Google Chrome or the Brave Browser.

Gear Step

A Gear Step is when a Torso or Leg Skill activation causes your Actress to move in a way similar to a regular Dodge or Roll:

That video above is a very obvious example since the Actress is doing a Roll animation whenever she activates her Bottoms Skill. Most Gear Steps are actually way more subtle than that:

Gear Stepping is a powerful action because it gives your Actress both a free Dodge and a Skill activation at the same time. If your Actress has equipment that can do this, make sure to add this exercise to your practice sessions as Gear Stepping can make or break matches due to the added mobility this ability brings.

Dodge Techniques

Dodge canceling is one of the most important concepts to learn and master in this game. Once you come to grips with the basics of controlling your Actress, Dodge Cancelling will bring your game to the next level.

That is, if you know how to use it wisely. If you don't, you'll end up with an overheated Boost Gauge and possibly an onslaught of ordnance your Actress can't escape from.

Animation Cancel

Most action animations have a fairly long recovery time. Many of them can be ended early by simply executing a Dodge command. You'll have to play around with your Actress' equipment to see what animation frames can be Dodge Canceled out of, since the timing can be slightly different for each of them.

Autoboost Dodge Cancel

At any point before the first frame of the melee attack animation begins your Actress can cancel the Autoboost by dodging in any direction. Autoboosting can be canceled with a Vertical Step as well:

Just keep in mind that certain weapons will not allow Dodge canceling out from specific Clash Gear attacks.

Charge Cancel

If you end up holding down a button to charge one of your Actress’ weapons like her Firearm Gear and want to cancel out of it, your only option is to Dodge. At any point during the Dodge, Roll, or vertical step animation, you can let go of the button held down without activating it.

If your Actress was charging her Shot, the game interprets this state as not having fired her weapon and will resume its reload cycle from where it was paused before getting interrupted by the charge sequence:

Shield Techniques

The Shield can do a few things than just mitigating damage and preventing knockback.

Autoboost Shield Cancel

Like Dodge Canceling, an Autoboost can be cancelled by activating the Shield at any point before the first frame of the melee attack animation begins. There's a few reasons why you'd want to do this method instead of Dodge Canceling:

  • If the Autoboost wasn't enough to escape a projectile attack, cancelling with the Shield at least mitigated some of the damage and also prevented your Actress from getting knocked back from it.
  • Shield Canceling from an Autoboost wastes less resources from the Boost Gauge than if your Actress was to Dodge Cancel out of it.
  • If the Boost Gauge is Overheated, Autoboosting is really the only option available, albeit a very unsafe one, but Shield Canceling out of it makes this action more viable. Just keep in mind that performing these actions will pause the Overheated Boost Gauge refill timer temporarily.

Just keep in mind that successive Autoboost Shield Cancels are slower than successive Dodges and Rolls due to the Shield needing to turn off first before you’re able to use it again.

Another consideration when using this technique is that not all Actresses can use this effectively. Play around with each Clash Gear to figure out which ones work the best.

Firearm Gear Techniques

There's a quite a few things you can do with this Gear depending on what your Actress is using.

Step Shot

A Step Shot occurs when you use your Actress’ Firearm Gear in the middle of a Dodge or Roll, but not during a Gear Step.

Now if you’re a Virtual-On or Senko no Ronde player, you’d think that this would give your Actress a different unique attack, but this only happens if you’re using Mutsumi’s exclusive Firearm Gear.

So what does a Step Shot do? It instantly skips the startup animation of the weapon and fires the projectile(s) immediately. This technique is more pronounced for Plasma Railguns because the Actress skips the part where she telegraphs her attack at the opponent with a laser sight and instead goes right to pulling the trigger:

The tradeoff to using a Step Shot is that your Actress is forced to stand still for a few moments to make up for the instantaneous firing animation. This part is similar to Virtual-On or Senko no Ronde.
