Martial Champion/FAQ
General
What kind of game is Martial Champion?
Martial Champion is a unique yet simplified take on the 2d fighting game genre. Each button corresponds to high, mid, or low type attacks rather than strength. After hitting with 4 attacks in a round, or once with certain other moves, such as a throw, you are guaranteed a knockdown. You normally can't combo your moves together, but while the opponent is knocked down, if you can get behind them, you can hit them with an unavoidable attack as they wake up. Throws are very strong, being instant and unbreakable, but they have a cooldown of 4.25 real seconds after each use. In addition to normal attacks and throws, each character has 2 special moves, usually performed with various directions and a button press.
The combat has an emphasis on poking and spacing, with whiff punishing & block punishing being very strong. The movement in the game is surprisingly fast, especially when everyone can use jump attacks to change momentum.
Different versions
The arcade version of Martial Champion, released worldwide in February 1993, has impressively large sprites for the time, and a completely unplayable final boss, Salamander. It has two modes, Arcade and Versus.
The PC-Engine version of Martial Champion, released for Japan only in December 1993, has noticeably downgraded in graphical & sound quality, but made Salamander unlockable, as well as added a stage select and damage settings to Versus mode. Brand new additions include a new intro cinematic, group match mode, options menu, super attacks, and minor rebalancing, such as less distance covered from most aerial jump attacks.
Characters
Who should I play?
- If you like shotos, try: Chaos, or Jin.
- If you like rushdown, try: Avu, Bobby, or Racheal.
- If you like zoning, try: Mahambah, or Goldor.
- If you like tricky or weird characters, try: Zen, Hoi, or Titi.
How's the tier list like?
Tiers in this game are not far apart, everyone is viable and can do well against each other. Though there are still some clear winners, and a clear loser, even Racheal can still hold her own with the best of 'em if you try hard enough. (The boss, Salamander, is unplayable without hacking, in the arcade version, and thus is not on this list.)
A: Avu, Bobby, Goldor, Mahambah.
B: Chaos, Titi, Jin, Hoi, Zen.
C: Racheal.
