Strengths |
Weaknesses
|
- Big toolkit: Mongo has the biggest movelist in the game.
- Big damage: Carpet bomb, Hand grenade and Flamethrower do good damage, almost lethal on CH.
- Big range and screen real estate coverage: Taser, Flamethrower, Dive Kick and his Standing Kicks cover a lot of space.
- Unblockable setups: Grenade hits low + any jump normal.
- The youngest looking 28 year old you'll ever see.
|
- Big blindspots: almost all of his moves have huge blindspots or recovery.
- Big hurtbox: Mongo is tall and prone to getting hit.
- Lacks a regular throw: His throw is a hitgrab and can be blocked, meaning Mongo struggles to open people up.

Worth noting all of mongos standing punches are simply the same move but with more hitstun/recovery/damage the higher you go.

Crouching Gun poke. While unassuming at a glance, it's actually one if not the best AA Mongo has. 2LK and 2MK share animation so they more probably than not share hitbox too.

The key difference here being that you can actually combo into Flamethrower or Knives, plus it does more damage due to it being a Medium. Use this one.

Mongo sweep. KDs on hit. Not a bad sweep, make sure to cancel into grenade for setups. It's the only Mongo normal that will hit the grenade back.

Mongo divekick. He basically does spiderman web swing. KDs on hit. On block it drops him to the ground very fast so you can continue pressuring.

Mongo throw. Unlike other throws in the game, Mongo has a hitgrab that can be blocked (!) and also whiffs on crouching opponents, but it can't be teched like regular throws. Has quite some range so you might get in on accident while trying to 5HP, so be careful with your inputs when close. It has a glitch where it applies the damage from the last move done to the throw landing. This means you can do less damage by doing a jab, SMG or Flashbang (literally no damage), but it also means you can do max damage by using Grenade (which is still probably the best option since it setups his unblockable).

Mongo shoots around 12~ bullets from his machine gun. Bullets actually hit around 3~4 separate times. Whiffs on crouching characters. While MG sounds great on paper, it's actually a really committal as a zoning tool given its bad recovery. It's mostly used to keep opponents blocking/crouching in place for its duration so Grenade can detonate.

Mongo throws a hand grenade about 3/4 of the screen. Once it lands, it'll detonate after 3 secs (unless kicked back by the opponent), hitting low and doing absurds amount of damage.
The recovery on the throw itself is very low, leaving Mongo free to threaten with his other tools, making the Nade a rather good choice to cancel into most of the time.
Grenade can be kicked back and forth between you and your opponent using lows and whoever kicked it last will have it work as their own. Each time it's kicked around it adds a bit of duration (can't be done indefinitely though). Since it hits low, you can actually do an unblockable with it by doing an air attack while the Nade explodes.

Mongo shoots electrifying lasers from his gun. Taser hits multiple times, nullifies some projectiles and covers a little AA angle compared to Machinegun and also hits on crouching opponents. Sadly it doesn't combo from anything, but it's decent to zone every now and then (Mind the recovery)

Mongo points his gun to the sky and a white flash covers the screen. Does no damage. Gimmick as they come, mostly used as a pseudo taunt due to its screeching SFX. The flash lasts too little for it to be used as a mix up tool, but it's there. Recovery isn't great either, but it's better than whiffing a Machinegun, Taser or Flamethrower (Still you're better off throwing a Nade or Knives.)

Mongo shoots flames from his gun. Very similar to Taser in that it absorbs projectiles, covers a slight AA angle and also hits crouching opponents, the key difference being that Flamethrower actually combos from mids/heavies, so it's usually your best ender in case you hit a far poke (Make sure you hitconfirm into it because the recovery isn't good at all).

Mongo jumps to the other end of the screen, dropping 3 bombs on his path, doing 50% of their health and launching them up if it hits. These bombs hit low and their explosion lingers for a couple frames. Carpet bomb is perhaps Mongo most misunderstood special. While at first glance it seems great, the hitboxes on the bombs are relatively small, they can be blocked low and it has insane recovery on Mongo's end, making it a hard committal choice. The sideswitch can open people up so it can be used as a mix up tool sometimes. It also shines on preemptive AA trades; If Mongo manages to drop at least one bomb before getting hit out of it, the bomb will usually hit the opponent back, ending the trade in his favor damage/oki wise.

Mongo stabs rapidly with his knife. Different button strenght change the speed of the stabs while he's doing them. Input can't be piano'd from different buttons and actually require the same input to be used. Knives are one of Mongo best tools to pressure opponents. They hit multiple separate times and will combo from close mediums/heavies. On the corner they will keep the opponent thinking about hitting a button. Make sure to use HP mash version since it has the best recovery (You can use the other versions to start the stabbing and switch button press to HP so it ends faster).

Combos
BnB Combos
2HP/5HP>HP Knives
Good for blockstrings/pressure.
2MK/5MK/2HP/5HP/5HK>Flamethrower
Stray pokes into KD. Make sure to hitconfirm since recovery on FT is very bad.
jHP/HK>5HK>Flamethrower
Most damaging jump-in combo. Can swap 5HK for 5MK for minimum damage loss but better frame advantage in case it doesn't confirm.
Mongo "Throw" 4/6 MP/HP>Grenade
In case you land the throw, always make sure to cancel into grenade for free damage (+unblockable setup)
Weapon Combos
Mongo can't pick up weapons :(
Strategy
General Gameplan
Mongo is somewhat versatile, though he leans into a Midrange style since many of his moves have big recovery or blindspots you have to be mindful of.
To win as Mongo you have to be fast and unpredictable. Poke with kicks and cancel into Knives to mantain pressure. Sneak a dive kick every now and then.
Throw the grenade and force the opponent to react, zone them out with Taser or Flamethrower, and if they respect enough you can Carpet Bomb to cross em up.
Okizeme & Setups
Grenade can technically lead to an unblockable. As it's about to explode, go in with a jump normal to force them to either eat the normal or the explosion (sometimes both).
