Doing chains gives you a damage bonus, but the extra time it takes to setup chains can make them less efficient than just making small chains quickly. Going for long chains also opens you up to getting tickled and losing all the work you put in. The downside to going fast, beyond the loss of the damage bonus, is that you have less time between clears to take stock of the boardstate. When cashing out coins the safest play is to build a chain that clears the emblem you want and the coins themselves on the same frame. This is uninterruptable but it requires a somewhat involved chain setup and thus is slow. Faster methods for cashing out coins (making a 1 chain of coins, or doing a 2 chain into coins) carry with them the inherent risk that your opponent may change the color before your coins can clear. If you see an opponent is going for a faster coin clear method you can attempt to setup a color that would be bad for them and effectively steal their item. Alternatively if you know your opponent is committing to building a longer chain to avoid getting punished like that, you can go for a faster, riskier play to try and take or widen the lead.
