This page details various ways to set up a training environment for Kizuna Encounter.

Peon2's FBNeo Training Script

The easiest & overall best method. In Fightcade 2 you can start this training mode by clicking "Training" on the lobby screen. For advanced usage check out the GitHub repository.

Arcade version

Load up the game in your emulator of choice (either MAME or Final Burn Neo), and make sure your settings have the BIOS changed to whichever version of Universe BIOS is applicable (most likely version 3.2). Load up a two-player match, press Start + Select to open the Uni BIOS menu, then activate the “Infinite Time” and both “Infinite Energy” cheats. Exit the Uni BIOS menu and you have training mode. Turn off one of the infinite life cheats and beat yourself up if you need to test desperation move stuff.

Using Eddienput for input recording/playback

You can set up input record and playback with Eddienput, a programmable controller which reads text files. This guide will apply to any Neo Geo game and explains setup for Final Burn emulator (but MAME or others should work very similarly).

  1. Download Eddienput and extract it to a folder of your choice and follow the setup instructions.
  2. Download neogeo.json and place it in Eddienput's 'config' folder so we can write inputs in Neo Geo syntax.
  3. With your own controller (or Keyboard) already plugged in, start Eddienput first, then your emulator. Now is a good time to set up your 2P Versus with cheats.
  4. For Final Burn you need to uncheck the Misc > Options > "Always process keyboard input" setting so our virtual controller can be mapped correctly.
  5. Switch to Eddienput and press the Insert key to start manual mode. This will show a diagram of a controller which shows the buttons we can bind by pressing various keys.
  6. Map 2P inputs: Open the dialogue in the emulator to bind your desired button, click on the Eddienput window, and then press the key that corresponds to each button on Eddienput's controller diagram. This will send Eddienput's virtual controller input to the emulator instead of your keyboard.
If you're using the neogeo.json file above, bind your Neo Geo 2P controls like this:
A is Keyboard X
B is Keyboard D
C is Keyboard S
D is Keyboard E
Joystick directions corresponds to arrow keys
Select/Start correspond to End and Home

Once you've mapped your controls press Insert on Eddienput's window again to close manual mode and you can begin writing input scripts. Open a notepad and write a text file with some basic rules:

Make sure your first line is "configs\neogeo.json" if you're following along and using the neogeo.json file.
Use numpad notation to write your input sequences. Separate each frame of input with a space. Use W to wait a specified number of frames, i.e. W60 to wait a 60 frames. Use + to enter multiple inputs on the same frame. Here are some examples:
6 2 3 B
Hayate's DP.
6 2 3 B W20 6+B
Perform Hayate's DP, and wait 20 frames to input 6B for a follow-up.
[2] W120 8+A
Hold down for 2 seconds, and then press 8A (Hayate's charge boomerang).
Refer to Eddienput's README or GitHub page for an explanation of more advanced playback functionality like as mixups and loops.
Note that Eddienput will mirror your scripted inputs to play properly for 2P side by default, press F1 or F2 to toggle which side your inputs are playing on.

Save your input script as a text file (.txt) anywhere and open it with Eddienput to load the script. You should bind a "play" button by pressing F9, it works on keyboard or controllers (but only Xinput, so if you use a PS4-style controller use DS4Windows to force Xinput). If you make changes to your input file you can reload it by pressing F5. If you need to move your 2P character around just hit Insert to get into manual mode again and use your keyboard to control. Be aware some keybinds may overlap with your emulator.

Once you're done setting everything up future usage will be as simple as starting Eddienput, then your emulator with the game, and choosing the script file you want to use.

Fu'un Super Combo (PS2/PS4)

Kizuna Encounter was ported to PlayStation 2 in the Japan-only Fu'un Super Combo collection and later ported to PS4 for a global release. Despite a global release, the PS4 version is also Japanese localized. Although we can't link you to a file source, we can tell you that the game emulates smoothly in PCSX2 if you have a legal copy of the PS2 release on hand. This section will detail how the training mode works in this release.

Locating & using training mode

To find training mode, press START at the title screen and move the cursor to the far right icon of a weightlifting figure and hit Circle. Select the second item in the list (first is for Savage Reign) and hit Circle again. The game will take you to a character select where you can pick your training mode team. You can enter the boss inputs here and pick them.

Hit Select to access the training menu. Most of the menu is in English, but there are a couple of pieces of Japanese so we will explain the menu structure and explain the Japanese dialogues afterwards. To navigate the training mode menu, confirm options with Circle and go up/return to main menu by pressing Select.

  • CONTINUE: Resume.
  • SKILL LIST: Move list. It's in Japanese, but you have this wiki anyway so no need to translate.
  • KEY SETTING: Button bindings & Macro binds are here.
  • PRACTICE MENU: Some dialogues are Japanese, see next section.
  • RESTART: Takes you to a dialogue to select your stage by moving the stick left or right over STAGE SELECT, and press Circle on CHARACTER CHANGE to return to team select with the chosen stage loaded.
  • GAME END: Returns to the collection's main menu.
