Introduction

Playstyle

On the surface it looks like he has retained his zoning gameplay from the Street Fighter II games, but in reality he leans more towards rushdown, setplay, and long combos. His Tiger Knee special and j.HK are great tools to get in against the opponent and can win off of one hit with his Tiger Uppercut loops. His Tiger Shots are situationally strong, but with how good the air game is in SF:TM it's not going to be as strong as you'd expect coming from his other versions. Still, he is considered one of the best characters in the game because of his myriad of strengths: mainly his high damage, arsenal of tools, and high priority both on the ground and when in the air.

Play Sagat if:

  • You like breaking your fingers with long combos
  • You love conditioning
  • You love jumping in

Do not play Sagat if:

  • If you want anti-airs that aren't specials
  • You don't like the input interpreter of SF:TM

Sagat's Jumping HK is considered one of the most powerful normals in the game, with a very wide hitbox that greatly separates Sagat from his opponent. Some characters have extremely limited options to respond to j.HK pressure, which defines the matchup by itself. This button can also be cancelled into other air buttons, with j.HP being the standout for adding more damage.

Danger Move

High & Low Tiger Shots
10 health or less
HCBx2+MK

A very powerful special that knocks the opponent towards him when it successfully hits, which is ideal for starting his loops.

Special Moves

Tiger Shot
QCF+P
Damage Guard Meter Stun Startup Active Recovery Adv. Hit Adv. Block Property
- Mid - - - - - - - Stagger

A good move to dissipate air fireballs from a neutral jump (Blade, Akuma), but for some reason gets an enemy out of a stunned state during a combo. Be aware of this property when doing Tiger Uppercut loops.

Ground Tiger Shot
QCF+K
Damage Guard Meter Stun Startup Active Recovery Adv. Hit Adv. Block Property
- Low - - - - - - - Stagger

This move's recovery ends when it lands (Sagat starts the standup animation). At half-screen or longer it does not push back. Against characters with long stagger animations the HK version from just over half-screen becomes an infinite.

Two-Hit Tiger Shot

Tiger Uppercut
f,d,df+P
Damage Guard Meter Stun Startup Active Recovery Adv. Hit Adv. Block Property
- Mid - - - - - - - Knockdown

LP version can juggle and recover fast enough that it can be repeated many times to do far more damage than Tiger Uppercuts of higher strengths. Sometimes you will need to throw a Tiger Knee into the mix to keep it going but this is usually a TOD if you can keep it up.

Tiger Knee
QCF,uf+K
Damage Guard Meter Stun Startup Active Recovery Adv. Hit Adv. Block Property
- Mid - - - - - - - Knockdown

The MK version can juggle indefinitely with proper spacing against Chun Li.

Evil Eye
Hold PPP, release
Damage Guard Meter Stun Startup Active Recovery Adv. Hit Adv. Block Property
- - - - - - - - - Stun

Strangely, Evil Eye will preserve any special states the opponent is in for the duration of the stun. For example, while Zangief is in the Violent Flat animation when Sagat stuns him with Evil Eye, he will continue to reflect projectiles until he is no longer stunned. Therefore, if you capture Zangief in this state and then use Tiger Shot, it will reflect and damage you, so use caution. The same applies for projectile invincibility states. If Balrog is caught during a Buffalo Headbutt, Tiger Shots will pass through him while he is stunned. Evil Eye can catch a KOed opponent in mid-air and stun them as normal, but if they are not struck again they will be allowed to continue fighting when they recover, potentially allowing them to defeat Sagat while technically dead.

Super Moves

Tiger Genocide
QCFx2+P
Damage Guard Meter Stun Startup Active Recovery Adv. Hit Adv. Block Property
- Mid - - - - - - - -
Tiger Crossfire
[b]QCFx2+K
Damage Guard Meter Stun Startup Active Recovery Adv. Hit Adv. Block Property
- - - - - - - - - -

A barrage where Sagat alternates throwing high and low Tiger Shots. Due to the nature of this move it has a high chance of dizzying if all of the shots hit.

Combos

[Medium Tiger Knee cr.LP]xN -- A great juggle combo

cr.HK [Light Tiger Uppercut]xN -- The famous Tiger Uppercut juggle combo, may sometimes need to incorporate Tiger Knee to continue juggling the opponent. Very difficult execution.

Matchups

Sagat (Mirror)

  • If you're struggling with countering j.HK, use an air-to-air j.HP as you jump up towards him.
  • Using meaty cr.LK stuffs reversal Tiger Uppercut
  • Be wary of double Tiger Shots (hcbx2 + K), the first low shot will make you want to jump but the high shot hits you before you can land. This is devastating if you want to finish your opponent because any of the fireballs are combo starters for Uppercut loops.
  • Uppercut loops can't be started from a raw LP Uppercut, you need to use either MK Knee or sweep.

Tips

  • Sagat funny.
