Introduction
Ryuko Matoi (纏 流子)
She is the daughter of Isshin Matoi and the main protagonist of KILL la KILL. She transferred to Honnōji Academy searching for the twin of her red Scissor Blade and the person who used it to murder her father.
Overview
Ryuko, commonly referred to as "Single Blade Ryuko" or "SBR" for short, is a grounded shoto with a strong defensive game. Ryuko is rather lacking in some areas due to her stubby normals, lackluster projectiles, and the majority of her moves being ground only. This forces her into a turtle playstyle in most matchups and she requires patience and game knowledge to know when to take her turn. Her ability to turtle is quite notable, as she can punish many options with her fast sidestep and defensive options on reaction. With her strong defensive options she can stall and time her opponents out if need be. If Ryuko achieves Valor Level 1, she becomes one of the fastest characters in the game and this can let her be way more aggressive and weave through much more than she could before, but she still suffers from her grounded kit, so use her Valor wisely. If you love to block and have patience be your guide to victory, then there's no better pick than Ryuko Matoi herself.

- Turtle Master: Difficult to run offense on or pressure thanks to her plethora of defensive options, such as her fast 2/8A, her 9f d.A, her armored sp.A, and her lightning fast sidestep which has little to no recovery, making it one of the best sidesteps in the game.
- Valor Level 1: If Ryuko achieves Valor Level 1, she becomes the fastest character in the game in terms of walkspeed, gains one of the fastest homing dashes in the game, and her front, side, and back step dash all become faster and gain True Invulnerability on startup.
- The 50/50: Ryuko has real 50/50 mix with her 5BA and 5BC, as 5BA hits sidesteps while 5BC is a guard break. Both of these attacks are incredibly fast and the opponent will have to guess if they blocked her 5B at any point during pressure.
|
- Grounded: The majority of Ryuko's kit is ground only and thus cannot hit airborne targets, which can let certain characters such as DTR, Gamagoori, and Nui get away with mistakes and run their offense with minimal risk against her.
- Poor Range: Nearly all of Ryuko's Close Range Attacks and Break Attacks are stubby and have very short range, also none of her projectiles go fullscreen, making her neutral rather poor.
- Low Damage: If Ryuko does manage to get a hit in, her damage is rather mediocre compared to most of the cast and it is not high enough to consistently force a Counter Burst from the opponent.
- Dash Attack Reliance: Most of Ryuko's notable punish options are all dash attacks, making her highly susceptible to moves with Uppercut Invulnerability such as most 2/8As or 5BAs.
