JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R/Alternate World Diego

From Mizuumi Wiki

Introduction

This article is about Diego Brando's alternate incarnation, primarily known as "AW Diego". For information about his base incarnation, see Diego Brando.

Originally brought into the "base world" by President Funny Valentine as a fail-safe in order to kill Johnny Joestar at the end of the Steel Ball Run race, the Diego Brando from an Alternate World serves as the true final antagonist of the seventh part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Steel Ball Run. Wielder of the Stand known as THE WORLD, with the ability to stop time for up to five seconds, his goal (much like his original counterpart) is to acquire the Holy Corpse at all costs, including stomping any opposition that may stand in the way of his goal. With a combination of dirty tactics and an intense urge to win, this new, crueler version of Diego will stop at nothing to claim the Holy Corpse and stand at the apex of society.

As a combatant, Diego is a rushdown/setup character with a unique status debuff, a teleport, and multiple strong ways of closing the gap on the opponent. Through "My trial is to conquer and kill at all costs.", he can apply a debuff that dramatically changes the properties of his other primary special move, "This is where the fun begins...". This makes Diego a powerful setup character with strong mobility tools and great neutral presence. Furthermore, not only is his damage high, but his meter gain in combos is extraordinarily good, allowing him to almost always end in a highly damaging metered option for even more offensive power.

However, Diego struggles in the defensive department, having a slightly lower amount of health than the average, and lacking a quick, invincible reversal of any kind. Additionally, because his Stand is active at all times, he has a uniquely large hurtbox, making him extremely susceptible to air normals and rendering his approach more difficult. Nevertheless, Diego's abilities will force his opponent to respect his neutral presence - and delete their health bar if they don't.

  • Stand/Mounted Hybrid: While Diego is considered a Mounted character, his Dismounted state summons his Stand, THE WORLD, at all times.
  • Mounted: While on top of Silver Bullet, all of Diego's attacks deal Chip Damage, and he cannot be affected by the Bind and Crumple effects. This comes at the cost of losing access to Stylish Evade, Stylish Guard, and his Throw.
  • Holy Corpse Parts: Diego can pick up the Holy Corpse parts, gaining different blessings with each part obtained.
  • THE WORLD: While Dismounted, Diego has the ability to stop time, rendering the opponent completely unable to act. It is similar to Axl Low's "One Vision" Overdrive from Guilty Gear -Strive-.
Playstyle
JJASBR AW Diego Small Icon.png Diego Brando (THE WORLD) is a Mounted character who utilizes his strong neutral presence to force mistakes and push his gameplan.
Pros Cons
  • High Damage: Diego's meterless routes offer an extremely high yield of damage for the amount of effort required, and his metered combos can do even more than that at minimal opportunity cost.
  • Meter Battery: While Diego certainly doesn't need meter to be strong, his basic combos can quickly yield extremely high amounts of meter to be spent on any variety of methods, between HHA, GHA or time stop resets.
  • Great Buttons: Between his fantastic j.H and 2M, Diego has an incredibly strong hold over the neutral game at a close range with large, oppressive buttons that lead into a full combo on any hit.
  • Extremely Large Hurtbox: Diego's unique attribute of being in Stand On at all times off horseback gives him one of the largest and widest hurtboxes in the game, with a multitude of cross-ups and instant overhead setups working exclusively on him.
  • No Reversals: Aside from universal mechanics such as Stylish Guard and Dodge, Diego has no fast, invincible reversal attacks that he could use to get the opponent off of him. As a result, the game can quickly snowball away from him if he gets knocked down in a bad situation.

Holy Corpse

Owing to his status as a Steel Ball Run character, whenever AW Diego is one of the combatants, three parts of the Holy Corpse will spawn over time across the stage. AW Diego can collect these parts by crouching on top of them while Dismounted; Holy Corpse parts collected will be carried over between rounds. Each part collected provides AW Diego with a buff that lasts until said part is lost via being knocked down, which drops the most recent part collected. Only 3 Holy Corpse parts will spawn during the match, so if two Steel Ball Run characters (Johnny, Gyro, Diego, another AW Diego, or Valentine) happen to face each other, they'll be forced to fight for them.

For AW Diego, the buffs applied are the following:

  • JJASBR Corpse Parts Icon (1).png One: Diego gains increased movement speed while Dismounted.
  • JJASBR Corpse Parts Icon (2).png Two: Enhances "My trial is to conquer and kill at all costs." by allowing Diego to have 2 traps out at a time, instead of just 1.
  • JJASBR Corpse Parts Icon (3).png Three: Diego's Guard Gauge regenerates faster. In addition, Diego becomes capable of regenerating Guard Gauge while Mounted.

After a lenghty startup, Diego stops time, freezing the stage effects, the battle timer, and the opponent.

  • Requires 1.5 HH Gauges to be used; startup accelerates if 3 HH Gauges have been accumulated before use.
  • Starting a cutscene with a Throw or an HHA/GHA will instantly end the Time Stop and take away the rest of Diego's meter.
  • Prevents the use of "Mounting" while the Time Stop is active.
  • Damage dealt to the opponent during the Time Stop is reduced. When the ability ends and time resumes, the opponent will suffer all damage dealt to them at once.
  • All attacks can OTG during Time Stop, restanding the opponent if they can reach. This allows setting up for juggles post-Time Stop, although normal IPS rules will still apply.
  • After the Time Stop ends, there is a ~5 second period where DIO cannot gain any HH Gauge (with JJASBR Akira Small Icon.png Akira's Assist providing the only exception).
  • Against himself, JJASBR Jotaro Part 3 Small Icon.png Jotaro (Part 3), JJASBR Jotaro Part 4 Small Icon.png Jotaro (Part 4), and JJASBR DIO Small Icon.png DIO, Diego can use this ability to move within their Time Stop for the minimum requirement of 1 HH Gauge.
