JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R is a fighting game based on the long-running JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise, featuring a cast of over 50 JoJo characters from across the series' history. Developed by CyberConnect2 (creators of the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm series of arena fighters, as well as Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles) and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, it was released on September 1st, 2022 for Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch. Despite being touted as a "remaster" of the original JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle from 2013, All-Star Battle R includes a multitude of new changes from the original game, including an overhauled combat system, new gameplay modes, and a massive rebalancing of the entire cast.

  • Dynamic Assists: All-Star Battle R's combat system allows players to choose one main character and one non-playable assist to summon in combat. Assists can cover a multitude of use cases and are all uniquely different, from projectile assists to help zoners cover more ground, to assists that strike as overheads and lows to open up the opponent in blockstrings. Assists also allow breaking an opponent's combo or true blockstring by calling them while being hit, allowing for momentum to smoothly flow back and forth over the course of a game.
  • Four-Button Fighter: All-Star Battle R uses four main buttons in combat: a light, medium, and heavy attack, as well as a Style button. The Style button triggers a unique mechanic for each character, such as calling forth a Stand for Stand characters and altering their moveset, activating a special install for Mode characters, or mounting their horse for Mounted characters.
  • Stylish Evade/Guard: All-Star Battle features the mechanic known as Stylish Evade, which allows players to invincibly sidestep any move if it is blocked within a few frames of it landing, similar to the Instant Block mechanic found in several other fighting games. While the mechanic returns in All-Star Battle R, a new mechanic called Stylish Guard has also been introduced, which allows usage of the same invincible sidestep through a universal parry. The differences between the two systems are very noticeable, as Stylish Guard is a much more punishable technique; nevertheless, it is the main way to get out of high pressure situations, and is one of the centerpieces of the neutral game.
  • Infinite Prevention System: The combo system in All-Star Battle R has been heavily tweaked to account for the new system changes. The Infinite Prevention System in the game allows the use of a single move twice in one combo before dropping out, with some exceptions. For example, while using 2L three times in a combo would trigger IPS, a Stand character who uses 2L twice, goes into Quick Stand On to activate their Stand, and then uses 2L two more times, would not drop the combo because those are accounted for as separate inputs. This gives the combo system a solid level of depth while still being simple enough for newcomers to understand.
  • Easy Beat: All-Star Battle R features an optional autocombo system known as Easy Beat, similar to the autocombos found in CyberConnect2's other anime games. By repeatedly pressing the light attack button, the character performs a simple light-medium-heavy string into a special move, which can then be canceled into a Heart Heat Attack with another press of the light button (depending on the character). Easy Beats are typically decent combos for beginners as well as safe on block in some situations, making them an easy tool for new players to use as they get into the game.
