Story

Kinnikuman Mariposa is one of the Five Fated Princes, a group of Choujins born on the same day at the same hospital as Kinnikuman, who, due to a nursery mishap, might plausibly be the true heir to the Kinniku throne. Each of the Fated Princes acted as an avatar for one of the five evil Gods; Mariposa is the vessel for the God of Flight, and in a wrestling context, this translates to his high-flying, luchador-inspired fighting style. Before his godly possession, Mariposa was known as George the Thief, an impoverished youth who turned to a life of crime. It was during this time that he happened to steal the Anoalo staff, a Robin family heirloom, which granted him mastery over fire. As Kinnikuman Mariposa, his main claim to being the true heir to the throne is in his ability to perform one of the Kinniku clan's 3 sacred techniques, the Muscle Revenger; however, this was eventually revealed to be a fake version, with Mariposa having misinterpreted the fresco depicting the move, and he was smitten by the Choujin Gods as a result.

Gameplay

Mariposa is a highly unorthodox character with a few notable quirks. Several of his attacks have highly unusual animations, such that to an unfamiliar eye, it is not always immediately obvious if he is mid-startup of a move, or if he has completely recovered from another move. Combined with the more robust, complex string options available to him, This can make keeping track of what a Mariposa player is doing a tricky experience. What is Mariposa's more famous gimmick however is his focus on backhit combos. In MGP2, some moves do more hitstun and cause different hit animations on backhit, enabling new combos, especially in the arcade version. Mariposa has a unique throw and a special that turns the opponent around, setting them up for a backhit combo. While backhit combos are not unique to Mariposa, the ability to consistently and proactively set them up is more-or-less exclusive to Mariposa, giving his gameplan an increased emphasis on flashy, if somewhat strange-looking, backhit combos.

Mariposa does have some notable weaknesses, chief among which his reliance on backhit combos, which are often janky to land by nature; as a result, Mariposa's combos are more inconsistent than most. A more pressing shortcoming of Mariposa is that the lengthy animations of some of his attack equate to unusually lengthy recovery times, even leaving him punishable on hit with some buttons. Although this downside can often be circumvented by simply cancelling out of the move, this means that parrying Mariposa frequently leaves him in a heavily punishable position.

Arcade vs PS2 Differences

When Kinnikuman MGP2 was ported to the Playstation 2, there were several gameplay adjustments made, primarily in system mechanics. One of the most notable changes is how backhit combos work; in the Arcade version, this enables extremely long combos, even to the point of infinites for some characters. The PS2 version heavily neuters this, with many of the more advanced backhit combos on Arcade causing an early knockdown on PS2. As a result, since backhit combos are a major part of Mariposa's gameplay, he ends up being one of the most changed characters from Arcade to PS2. Unfortunately, as the Japanese community primarily plays on Arcade, there is very little high-level footage of PS2 Mariposa. This page will mostly be based on the PS2 version (otherwise noted), and the combos here should work even on Arcade; however, these would rarely be optimal routes in the Arcade version.
