Gooey is a very strong character with a wide range of abilities to handle any situation.  From floating, to becoming a fireball, to turning into a rock, Gooey's transformations make him exceptionally hard to pin down.  Gooey's long tongue attacks and dark laser projectile allow him to effectively attack his opponent at close and long ranges, allowing him to engage in any strategy exceptionally well.
